What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy, also referred to as "colonic" or "colonic irrigation", is a safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine.  By introducing a small amount of water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis.  This process is repeated several times during a session.  Use of water as a method of cleansing was first noted by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Devices for mechanically introducing water into the rectum were developed in Europe as early as the 10th and 11th Century.  Today's sophisticated technology makes this health practice both safe and sanitary.

What Are the Benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy?

A healthy, strong functioning colon is essential to maintaining good health. The colon, together with the kidneys, lungs and skin are responsible for eliminating toxic waste from your body. Over time, your colon may lose its ability to properly eliminate waste from the gastrointestinal tract due to a combination of poor diet, improper food combining, drug intake, stress and/or lifestyle. Many people experience this, yet more often than not ignore the significance. When the colon is not functioning properly, it places the rest of the body on overload. Cleansing, hydrating and re-toning a poorly functioning colon may help reduce the risk of illness and 'dis-ease'. While the lungs, skin, kidneys and liver also serve to eliminate toxins, people have experienced that when they ensure that the colon is cleansed and rejuvenated, the well-being of the whole body is greatly enhanced. Colon hydrotherapy has been found to be an effective process available to accomplish this work quickly and easily.

Colon hydrotherapy is medically indicated as a colon cleansing method in preparation for a radiologic endoscopic examination such as a colonoscopy. In addition, colon hydrotherapy may be beneficial for individuals who are experiencing symptoms such as constipation, indigestion, headaches, lower back pain, fatigue or low energy, hemorrhoids, diarrhea, gas or bloating, occasional nausea, mood swings, leaky gut syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome.

Is Colon Hydrotherapy Safe?

With modern colon hydrotherapy devices and the standardization of training and procedures, it is often safer than administering an enema. Colonics have a definite advantage and greater long-term benefits over laxative overuse which can be irritating to the colon and over time, reduce the ability of the colon to function on its own.

All materials, including tubing, speculums and under pads are for one time use and are disposed of after each client. In addition, the Prime Pacific, Aquanet, FDA Class II cleared colonic device, has a triple filtered water filtration system, and an internal self-cleaning system that is used to disinfectant the machine after each session. Extra care is taken to clean and disinfect the bathroom and all commonly touched services after each client. An air filtration system with ultraviolet light is used in the treatment room to help keep the air free from contaminants.

However, there are circumstances in which colon hydrotherapy should not be considered. You should not pursue colon hydrotherapy services if you have any of the following conditions without consulting with your doctor:

  • Recent Rectal or Colon Surgery
  • Cancer of the Rectum or Colon
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Uncontrolled Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Kidney Disease (decreased kidney function)
  • Fissures or Fistulas
  • Abdominal Hernia
  • Severe Hemorrhoids (with frequent bleeding)
  • GI Hemorrhage/Perforation
  • Aneurysm
  • Severe Anemia
  • History of Seizures
  • Pregnancy
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (eg, Crohns, Colitis)
  • Recent Abdominal Surgery (less than 6 months)
  • Prostatitis
  • Cirrohsis of the Liver

You will be asked to complete a contraindication questionnaire form and if you have a concern about your health or the appropriateness of colon hydrotherapy, you should consult your doctor. If you are diagnosed with any of the above conditions or have Diverticulitis, Colitis or Crohn's disease, you will be required to have your doctor complete a Medical Release Form in order to receive colon hydrotherapy.

Preparing For Your Colonic

Properly preparing for a colonic can make a big difference. We strongly recommend that you follow the suggestions listed below:

For Two to Three Days Before your Colonic Session

  • Eat lots of leafy greens and fruit
  • Eat whole grains such as whole-grain breads and brown rice
  • Eat lean meats like fish or chicken

Note: Some people find avoiding all wheat and gluten products as well as dairy products is helpful for them to prepare for a colonic as well as throughout the duration of a series of colonics.

On the Day Before your Colonic Session

We encourage you to refrain from the following. These are just suggestions to help make the process easier for you.

  • Alcohol, carbonated and caffeine containing beverages
  • Refined carbohydrates or processed foods
  • Refined sugar
  • Fried foods
  • Gas producing foods such as beans, cabbage, broccoli, etc.
  • Dairy products
  • Red meat and soy products

On the Day of your Colonic Session

  • Don't eat a meal within two hours of your session
  • Don't drink anything within one hour of your session
  • Eat light choosing foods such as fruit, salad, steamed greens, whole grains and lean meats
  • Stay well-hydrated

Does Colon Hydrotherapy Hurt?

Most people describe their colon hydrotherapy session as refreshing and relaxing.  The warm, purified water is introduced slowly and can be easily adjusted for client comfort. The insertion of the speculum can be an odd feeling for some but lasts for only a few seconds. Some people may experience some slight cramping immediately prior to a release. There is always close monitoring and interaction between the client and therapist to ensure that your experience will be as comfortable as possible.

Can I Get a Colonic During My Menstrual Cycle?

There is no reason to avoid having a colonic during your menstrual cycle. In fact, it is a good time to receive a session as your body is already cleansing. Your flow will not interfere with the success of the session. However, wearing a tampon during a session might be uncomfortable for some women. If you tend to experience a lot of cramping during your cycle, you might want to wait to receive your colonic session after you complete your cycle.

How Many Sessions are Needed?

The number of sessions recommended depends on each person's symptoms and goals. Generally a series of two to three sessions scheduled closely together is recommended to ensure initial cleansing and hydration benefits. The number of additional sessions will vary depending on individual needs. Individuals who have more severe digestive issues may require more sessions to restore optimal colon health. Once the initial series is complete, a maintenance schedule of 1 session every 4 - 8 weeks is recommended in order to continue all of the great benefits you have given yourself with the initial series. Some people find repeating a series of sessions on a quarterly basis to be highly beneficial. A maintenance plan can help to keep toxic load to a minimum and decrease the burden on other organs of elimination such as your skin, liver and kidneys. Your individualized appointment schedule is best determined during your initial session when your history is reviewed, your goals are discussed and the effectiveness of the first session is determined. Colon hydrotherapy is best utilized as an integral part of an overall wellness program.

What Can I Expect After a Colonic?

After your session, you will have some bathroom time to ensure that any residual water and waste are eliminated. After getting dressed, you will return to the treatment room for a glass of filtered water containing liquid trace minerals.

Most people feel refreshed and energized after a colon hydrotherapy session and should be able to go about their day just as one would after having a normal bowel movement. Many people report a feeling of cleanliness and lightness and even a sense of mental clarity.  On occasion, some people do feel a little tired but most people can resume normal activities for the rest of the day. Also, it can be normal for people to miss a day or two of bowel eliminations after a session, as what was "in the queue" for subsequent movements has been eliminating during the session.

What Should I Eat After My Session?

After a colon hydrotherapy session, focus on hydrating foods like broth-based soups, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Choose fresh, whole foods to replenish your system. Soups, smoothies, steamed vegetables, and proteins such as chicken, tofu, or fish are great options. It's best to avoid gas-producing foods and heavy meals for at least 24 hours to support your digestive recovery.  Continue to focus on staying hydrated by drinking plenty of filtered water and limiting beverages containing alcohol and caffeine as these can be dehydrating.
